Got the inside plate mounted on the left side and started on the right. Spun out an aluminum "drill guide" to perfectly align the .500 holes in the inside plate. Eric, a question for you. Do I need to plate the bottom in the rear. I really do not want to as it's a place for dirt and moisture to collect.
Sorry this is so long in coming. The shock mounts really did come together nicely. I like the drill block you created to ensure the holes are concentric. While yes it is true that boxing the base would stiffen the joint, you are correct that it would cause potential interference as well as trap dirt. If you want to strengthen the design, you would get just as much additional strength by tying the two plates together in the center. You could do this by using a hole saw to drill through both plates and weld in a tube. However, I do think the design is sufficiently strong as is. The only thing boxing the frame would get you is increasing the resistance to buckling. While this is a desirable trait, I think you have a high enough resistance to buckling as is. I think it comes down to aesthetics now.
